What this is

QuakeGlobe is a real-time earthquake and volcano monitoring dashboard. It aggregates public seismic catalogues and volcano bulletins into one place so you can see what's happening around the planet โ€” and around you โ€” at a glance. It also includes an experimental volcanic eruption-probability model for Philippine and global volcanoes, plus preparedness guidance.

How it stays current

Earthquake data is pulled from the source catalogues roughly every 15 minutes and cached, so what you see is typically minutes old rather than hours. Each source has its own coverage and detection threshold โ€” USGS is strongest in the Americas, EMSC across Europe and Asia, JMA for Japan, GeoNet for New Zealand, and PHIVOLCS provides dense M1+ coverage of the Philippines. Because of that, the same event can be reported with slightly different magnitudes or locations by different agencies; preliminary values are also revised as more data arrives.

The eruption-probability model

Each volcano starts from a baseline eruption rate derived from its recorded history, which is then adjusted by official PHIVOLCS alert levels, time since the last eruption, and live seismic precursors (earthquake triggering, b-value anomalies, depth migration, swarms). The result is converted to a probability with a Poisson model. It is a statistical estimate over multi-year windows, not a forecast that an eruption is imminent โ€” and every signal is shown with its direction and source so you can see exactly why a number is higher or lower.

Why do magnitudes sometimes differ from the news?
Different agencies compute magnitude with different methods and networks, and early values are preliminary. We show the source for each event so you can check the authoritative figure.
Does โ€œno recent earthquakesโ€ mean it's safe?
No. It only means none were recorded in that window. Seismically active regions stay at risk during quiet stretches โ€” keep an emergency plan ready.
What magnitude scale do you use?
Modern catalogues report moment magnitude (Mw), the successor to the original Richter scale. It's logarithmic โ€” each whole number is ~31ร— more energy.
