What is plate tectonics?

The Earth's outermost layer โ€” the lithosphere โ€” is not a single solid shell. It is fractured into large slabs called tectonic plates that float on the hotter, slowly flowing mantle beneath. Driven by heat from Earth's interior, these plates creep across the surface at roughly the speed your fingernails grow โ€” a few centimetres a year.

Almost all of the world's earthquakes and volcanoes happen at plate boundaries, where two plates meet. There are three basic kinds: plates pulling apart (divergent), sliding past each other (transform), and one plate diving beneath another (convergent, or subduction).

How plate boundaries cause earthquakes

The Philippines is dominated by the third type โ€” subduction โ€” which produces both its largest earthquakes and its volcanoes.

Convergent (subduction)

One plate dives beneath another into the mantle. The descending slab locks, builds stress, then ruptures in great megathrust earthquakes โ€” and melts to feed volcanoes above.

Transform (strike-slip)

Two plates slide horizontally past each other. The Philippine Fault Zone is a classic example, capable of large shallow earthquakes.

Divergent (spreading)

Plates pull apart and new crust forms, mostly along mid-ocean ridges. These produce frequent but generally smaller earthquakes.

Why the Philippines is so active

The Philippine archipelago is caught in a tectonic vice. To the east, the Philippine Sea Plate subducts westward beneath the islands along the deep Philippine Trench. To the west, a portion of the South China Sea floor on the Sunda / Eurasian Plate dives eastward at the Manila Trench. The islands themselves straddle this collision zone.

Squeezed between these opposing subduction zones, the crust is also sliced by the Philippine Fault Zone, a 1,200 km strike-slip fault running the length of the country. The result is one of the highest concentrations of earthquakes and active volcanoes anywhere on Earth โ€” the country records thousands of earthquakes every year.

The Pacific Ring of Fire

The Ring of Fire is a roughly 40,000 km horseshoe of subduction zones tracing the rim of the Pacific Ocean โ€” from the Andes up through North America, across the Aleutians, and down through Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, and the southwest Pacific. About 90% of the world's earthquakes and a large majority of its active volcanoes occur along it.

The Philippines lies squarely on the western arc of this ring. The same subducting slabs that generate its great earthquakes also melt at depth, supplying the magma that built the country's volcanoes โ€” which is why seismic and volcanic hazard go hand in hand here.
