ScorePulse — glossary

Plain-language definitions of the terms used across ScorePulse (TheSportsDB).

Fixtures & status

Fixture
A single scheduled match between two teams on a given date, within a particular competition and round. The basic unit a live-scores service tracks.
Match status
Where a fixture is in its lifecycle: scheduled (not started), live / in-play (under way), or finished (over). The status tells you whether a 0–0 means “not yet” or “genuine draw”.
Postponed
A fixture moved to a later date before or instead of being played — commonly due to weather, safety or scheduling clashes. It will be replayed in full at the new time.
Abandoned
A match stopped part-way through and not resumed, for example because of weather or crowd safety. Whether the partial result stands or the game is replayed depends on the competition’s rules.

Structure

Competition / league
An organized series of matches with a defined set of teams and rules — a league, cup or tournament. Sits below the sport and above the season in the hierarchy.
Season
One edition of a competition, usually spanning a year or a split year (e.g. 2025–26). Matches within a season are grouped into rounds or matchdays.
Round / matchday
A grouping of fixtures played in the same stage of a season — a numbered matchday in a league, or a named stage (last 16, quarter-final) in a knockout.
Home & away
The home team hosts at its own venue; the away team travels to play there. Many competitions balance the schedule so each pairing meets once at each ground.

Formats & standings

Round-robin league
A format where every team plays the others across a season and is ranked in a standings table by points, rather than being knocked out after a single loss.
Knockout / bracket
A single-elimination format: the loser of each tie is out, and winners advance through rounds until one team remains. Often seeded to keep top teams apart until late.
Points
What teams earn for results in a league. The common football system is 3 for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss; the table ranks teams by total points.
Goal difference
Goals scored minus goals conceded across a season — a frequent first tiebreaker when teams are level on points. A bigger margin breaks the tie in your favor.
